The Open Arms in Claughton has closed.:

The pub(http://whatpub.com/pubs/WIR/055/open-arms-claughton) was originally named the Avenue, a large former Birkenhead Brewery pub built in 1957 on the site of a cinema destroyed in the blitz. After a period of closure it was refurbished, renamed as the Open Arms and reopened in 2012. It closed in May 2015 and is rumoured to be developed as flats.

The Wirral Branch Pub of the year was awarded to Gallaghers in Birkenhead at an awards evening on 21st May. The pub was chosen from the nominations received from CAMRA members and judged objectively on (1) quality of beer, (2) atmosphere & decor, (3) service & welcome, (4) community focus, (5) sympathy with CAMRA aims and (5) good value. Three other pubs were highly acclaimed by the judges and were awarded Pub of Excellence on the evening; these were: The Harp at Neston the West Kirby Tap and the Stage Door Tap at the Queens Royal, New Brighton.
